We’ve found that the best way to start a new, healthy week is with a dose of inspo. And girl, we have some major motivation for you! Today, we’re sharing Kelsy’s story. This cutie is one of last year’s Tone It Up Challenge winners. She saw major results by ditching low-calorie diet foods and embracing lean, clean, ‘n green eating with the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan. Since coming to Cali for the winners’ trip, Kelsy has some exciting updates! She’s going to be a mama! Kelsy is 7 months pregnant, and she’s been a super active mama-to-be. Tell us about yourself! What has changed for you since last year’s challenge?
Hi beach babes! My name is Kelsy, and I live with my husband in the suburbs of Detroit, MI. I work as a recruiter and travel frequently for my job. I love trying new workouts and recently ran my first half marathon!
A LOT has changed since the TIU challenge last year. I became pregnant about 3 months after our TIU girls’ trip, so I have traded in my abs for a big round belly! Definitely not complaining, as I am loving every single moment of being pregnant. I 100% attribute my pregnancy being a breeze to my healthy and active lifestyle I kept before and continue to keep during my pregnancy. Thanks, TIU! I’ve also decided to make a career change since the challenge and started studying for my personal training certification. Can’t wait to turn my passion into a career!
How has following the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan contributed to your success?
The Tone It Up Nutrition Plan totally changed the way I look at food. As a gymnast growing up, I always tried to watch what I ate, which led me to unhealthy eating habits like low-calorie frozen meals and fake diet foods. The plan taught me to fuel my body with nutritious superfoods that keep me energized ALL day long. I eat more now on the plan than I ever did before and continue to lose weight and tone up for good! All the recipes are easy to make, delicious, and #TIUHubbyApproved!
What inspired you to make a change in your life?
I found Tone It Up about 6 months after I got married. (I wish I would have found it before!) After I got married, I put the stress of the wedding behind me and let my nutrition and fitness fall to the wayside. I love to cook, so I started cooking for my husband, but the meals I was making were not the most nutritious. (Hello, homemade mac n’ cheese!) I was also traveling a lot for work, which meant lots of client dinners and cocktails. It was on one of my business trips that I looked in the mirror and didn’t recognize myself. I knew I needed to make a change, especially nutrition wise. I frequently worked out but never saw any changes in my body. I was one of those people that thought you could out train a bad diet – YOU CANNOT! I started following some TIU girls on Instagram and decided to buy the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan right before the Bikini Series last year. Officially becoming a member has been the best decision I could have made toward becoming a healthier ME!
How did you motivate yourself?
This community has seriously been the biggest motivating factor in my TIU journey. Starting my own Instagram page has been so helpful in keeping myself accountable with workouts and meals. There are days when I don’t want to get out of bed to get my Booty Calls in, but I look at this whole community killing it EVERY DAY, which motivates me to get my booty moving!
How have you maintained your healthy lifestyle?
Even though I may be sporting a rounder tummy, I haven’t let it get in the way of my workouts too much. In my first and second trimester, I continued to follow the Weekly Schedule and videos. Now that I am in my third trimester, I need to make more modifications, but I love finding new or old TIU workouts that are pregnancy friendly. Hello, arms and booty workouts!
It is so important to eat lean, clean, ‘n green, especially now that I am growing another human life inside of me! I have continued to follow the TIU Nutrition Plan throughout my pregnancy but have been adding in a few more calories as my pregnancy has progressed. The plan has an entire section dedicated to healthy calorie add-ons, which I love!
What did coming to California for last year’s winners’ trip mean to you?
The TIU girls’ trip last year honestly changed my entire perspective on life. Sounds dramatic but it’s true! I was totally blown away by all the strong and inspiring females I met. Karena and Katrina have inspired me for so long, so to be able to meet them in person felt like an absolute dream. They are so down to earth, warm, and have inspired me to pursue a career in the fitness industry! It was amazing to get a behind-the-scenes look at how this TIU community was built and how it continues to grow. The TIU HQ has so much passion for this community and we are blessed to have them work so hard for us each day!
Each and every one of the other winners — Stephanie, Lora, Heather, Lily, Chelsea, and Yassi — hold a special place in my heart. All of their stories inspire me every day to keep pushing and never give up on this healthy lifestyle. We are all bonded through this experience and I can now say I have six new lifelong friends! It is a great feeling to know that you can go anywhere in the country and find fellow TIU girls!
What advice would you give someone who needs encouragement?
You are not alone! There is a whole community of us working toward living a healthy lifestyle, and we are all here to support one another. All you need to do is scroll through the community or Instagram to find encouragement or motivation. Also I think the biggest thing for me was to trust the process. I felt like sometimes I was working so hard and wasn’t seeing changes, but then I look back at my transformation photos and I am like, “dang girl!” You can do it, too!
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself during this journey?
That I can wake up at 5 am to work out! I was never a morning person before but after finding Tone It Up, I realized the importance of getting that Booty Call in first thing. I love that Karena and Katrina are always coming up with new challenges and workouts to keep our bodies guessing, which makes waking up in the morning exciting. Being a part of this community is so fun, which makes being healthy easy!
Being pregnant, I have been all about the arms and booty workouts lately. Got to work on those mom arms! Some of my go-to workouts have been Sleek Arms with Karena, Rock Your Body from Beach Babe 4, and Kettle Booty. Can’t wait to jump into more of the Body Love workouts once I have the baby!
What are your go-to Tone It Up Nutrition Plan meals and snacks?
Hands down the Perfect Fit Pancakes. I don’t know how I lived without these before Tone It Up. They are such a treat after an intense Booty Call. I also love any of the overnight oats recipes, especially the Peanut Butter Banana — YUM! This past challenge, I especially liked the Blondie Muffins and the Red Lentil Butternut Squash Soup. These were also #TIUHubby approved! :) During my first trimester, Perfect Fit Smoothies were a lifesaver to sneak in all those fruits, veggies, and lean protein I needed!
