Rebecca’s Tone It Up Story!

We’re so excited to share team member, Rebecca’s story with all of you!

If you don’t already know and follow Tone It Up girl Rebecca… you should! @rebeccatiu Her determination and motivating story will change your life, your perspective and inspire you to be the best version of yourself!

“First of all, thank you so much for asking me to do this. The Tone It Up Community means more to me than I could possibly say. Without it, I would’ve relapsed a million times over. I’ve developed an inner strength I didn’t know I could have, and for that, I will be forever grateful to Tone It Up!
Tell us about yourself :)
I’m originally from Houston, Texas, but I came to Toronto almost 7 years ago to attend the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music. I’m now a professional harpist, looking for a job that will allow me to stay here in Canada. I’ve written and recorded two EPs, the most recent of which is available at www.rbke.bandcamp.com. Ideally, one day I’ll be touring and performing & writing regularly. I have one obnoxiously awesome little brother and two older half-brothers. Friends and family mean everything to me.

The third pic was after a few months on the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan.
What made you decide to change and what was your biggest inspiration to finally make a change in your life?

Well, I’d gotten up to 180 after I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease and put on steroids. It caused me to put on a lot of weight, but I was always told that once I ceased steroid usage, it would all just slough off. I was weened off the steroids and to my surprise (and horror) the weight didn’t budge. I joined a gym and signed up for personal training– the weight still didn’t budge. It took MONTHS after that before I realized that the issue was my diet. The steroid usage had ramped my appetite and I hadn’t properly adjusted when I went off them. After a couple more months of knowing what I needed to do but not having the guts to actually do it, I had a pivotal “Ok, that’s enough” moment. My boyfriend at the time stepped on the scale and weighed about 40 pounds LESS than me…and he’s a foot taller. That was it, I was done messing around and actually finally applied myself to the calorie-restricted diet that got me down to 105. That was all good and fine from the weight loss perspective, but it did nothing for me health-wise and long term.

How did you find out about Tone It Up?

I was first introduced to Tone It Up though the 2012 Drop 10 SELF Magazine program. I found the videos easy to follow and loved carrying around the tear out cards (they traveled with me all over the country!). I began following the blog and doing all the workouts and lusting after the nutrition plan! I finally purchased it in August. Looking back, it was the best money I’ve ever spent! I wanted to utilize the method to the fullest, and buying the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan allowed me to do so!

What motivated you to stick to your routine?

Checking in on social media and the constant connection Karena and Katrina maintain with the community. The fact that they’re able to consistently Check in with the team and provide new material makes me want to work harder – for them and for all my Tone It Up sisters!

Did you have any setbacks along the way? If so, how did you overcome them?

When I was actually losing the weight, no. I didn’t really have setbacks because I was so entirely devoted. That was fine when I was trying to lose the bulk of my weight, but it’s not a sustainable lifestyle. Being healthy – that’s the more difficult, long term solution; but it’s absolutely worth it. I think my biggest setback issue these days is actually social eating or eating clean when I have friends visiting. I’ll often tell myself “Enjoy yourself! You can let loose a little!” but I end up letting loose in all the wrong ways and feeling sick, as well as gaining weight and losing muscle tone. I try to overcome them by changing my inner dialogue to keep myself strong and sticking to the cleanest options possible. That and working out with my friends when they visit!

How has Tone It Up helped you change your life?

I’m about to run a 5K. Let’s start with that. It’s HUGE for me. I’ve never ever, EVER been a runner and always done everything possible to get out of running. I was involved in competitive sports growing up, and yet I always weaseled my way out of running. Now, it thrills me! Tone It Up has pushed me to become a better version of myself. I’m excited and energized about working out and taking different sorts of fitness classes. I also have almost entirely cut out processed foods (I’m a realistic person though, occasionally they sneak in). This was something I honestly never thought would happen when I read through the nutrition plan. But if you follow the plan, they no longer make sense…and you no longer want them! It’s great.

What are you doing now to keep up with your healthy lifestyle?

Constantly checking in! Engaging with the community. Pushing myself to try new things. And being in love with how it all makes me feel!
What are some of your favorite healthy foods and snacks?  What did you have for breakfast & lunch today?

I’m a big fruit and veg junkie. My favorite somewhat-indulgent but healthy snack is a couple of organic corn thins topped with nut butter, sliced banana, cinnamon, and a drizzle of agave. Heaven! I love starting my day with Perfect Fit protein pancakes topped with warm berries and Bombshell Spell! For lunch I generally grab a raw bowl or a healthy prepared food option from Whole Foods.
How do you treat yourself while staying on track?

I indulge in the sometimes more expensive health foods – like taking myself to any of the vegan restaurants and splurging on juices and delicious food. I’d rather splurge money-wise than calorie or health-wise.

What is your workout routine like?

Two-a-days are now standard practice for me. I don’t even think twice about it. I’ll wake up and either do HIIT the Beach or run for a half hour and then, in the evening I run again and add strength training!

What is your favorite TIU workout?

I’m actually currently loving on the Biker Babes & Itty Bitty cardio routines! HIIT the Beach changed my life though, especially after watching the DVD Extras and seeing all the obstacles K&K went through to make it. You get the feeling of intensity and devotion and it makes you want to really give it your all! Also Surfer Girl because of the spontaneous dance break!  (See the DVD Extras HERE!)

What advice would you give someone who needs motivation and encouragement to get healthier?

YOU have to want it for it to work. You have to know what you want and why you want it, otherwise relapsing is a distinct possibility. Be devoted to yourself and know that healthy is happy. You deserve to be both healthy AND happy! And absolutely get an accountability buddy, there’s nothing like knowing you’re responsible to someone else. It’ll keep you focused and you’ll develop a friendship along the way!

Tell us about your current goals? What are you looking forward to most this summer?

Current goals are to get about 10-15 pounds off again. I’ve been yo-yoing due to insane life stuff throwing wrenches in my plans. After running the 5K, I want to work my way up to a half marathon. I’m anticipating this will take a couple of years. This summer I’m looking forward to the sun and running outside–for the first time ever!
