Tell us about yourself!

Hi team!! I am a 28 year old mermaid from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania! I have been happily married to my best friend for just about a year and half now and we have a little furry baby named Charlie. I work as a nurse taking care of elders on a geriatric unit. I love my job because it reminds me to cherish every moment and live life to the fullest. In my spare time I love to workout, spend time with friends and family, vacation, shop, hike and bake!

How did the Tone It Up Nutrition Plan contribute to your success?

The TIU nutrition plan was the reason for my success. Before, I didn’t know how to plan meals throughout the day. The nutrition plan takes all the guesswork out. K&K could not have made it any easier.

The meal plan is simple and easy to follow and has made me more knowledgeable about food and nutrition. Not only do I love the recipes, but I love the variety of editions for different seasons and the holidays. I am always full, satisfied and happy.

Plus, the recipes are so good I can bring them to events or Sunday dinners and people love them.

What was your biggest inspiration to make a change in your life?

When I moved out and went to college, I became so consumed in studying for nursing school I didn’t have any time to be active. After three years of sleeping in, studying all day, partying all night and eating late night pizza, I hit an all-time low. I only wore black because it was slimming and had a very low self-esteem, which was unlike my bright and cheery personality.

When I got my first job and started receiving a paycheck again, I treated myself to a vacation with girlfriends in Punta Cana. It wasn’t until then that I finally had the nerve to step on the scale or try on a bikini. I hated what I saw and how I felt. It was right then and there that I realized I needed to change. I decided I would do everything in my power to get back to the happy, healthy and energetic version of myself.

How did you overcome setbacks?

Around a month after we bought our house,  I was working 12 hour shifts, sometimes working 16 hours to pick up overtime to help pay for our wedding. Between wedding planning, working long rotating shifts, studying for school, missing my fiancé and learning to care for a new house I was running low on energy and didn’t have time to workout and meal prep. After a short lived pity party, I pulled it together and realized how important it is to plan on Sundays.

What’s the most surprising thing you learned about yourself?

Nothing is impossible. Physically, I am amazed at how much I accomplished. I signed up for two half marathons back to back (6 days apart). I never ran a half marathon in my life but wanted to take on the challenge. I trained hard and finished both in less than 2 hours!

Since following Tone It Up there hasn’t been a week I have not meal prepped, got in a few workouts, checked my members email or kept up with the community. I have become the best version of myself and can truly say I am so blessed and happy.

What advice would you give someone who needs encouragement to get healthy?

Don’t stop! Don’t quit! This is the best decision I have ever made for myself. Anyone can do this; I am here to prove it. When you think you can’t run any further, prove to yourself that you can. There is no such thing as being too busy to take care of you, make time! Do not let your mind control your body. Don’t give up if you slip up. Always remember why you started and how far you have already come. A healthy and happy body in return provides you with a positive mind. Don’t compare yourself to others; we are all on our own beautiful and amazing journey!! When you follow your heart and dreams the possibilities are endless.

  1. Love her story! So many can relate to this. Great inspiration to start the week! Thanks K&K for sharing Carey’s story!

  2. Wow… amazing story and running 2 half marathons in under 2 hours each!!! great job!!! so motivational and inspiring… just the right level of “pick-me up” for a MOnday morning :)

  3. Very inspiring and motivational! Thanks for your story, Carey! No excuses! I’ll be sure to check you out on instagram! Happy prepping everyone!! :)

  4. This was a really good for me today. I love her concluding paragraph, especially the part about being too busy to take care of ourselves. I need to remind myself of that and be more determined to plan (save time to make time to care for myself) and schedule fitness. I go to bed late, do not get up in time for AM booty call and than am overtired throughout the day. I prepped this Sunday (stayed up way too late for AM workout) but now that I have meals ready and planned for the week I am hoping for normal hours of sleep each night and getting up for that AM shot of energy!

May print out the conclusion and keep it in my TIU journal! Amazing story, Carey, and great job!
