How To Make Your Own Hummus!


Hummus is one of our go-to afternoon snacks. Paired with some sliced cucumbers, baby carrots, or chopped bell peppers, it makes the ultimate Tone It Up Nutrition Plan approved bite. Plus, it’s high in protein and fiber to keep ya feeling satisfied until dinner. But as much as we love hummus, we love mixing it up even more. And changing the flavor is super easy. Best part: you don’t even have to make your own hummus from scratch. When we’re in a pinch, we buy original hummus and mix in whatever flavor we’re feelin’ that day. That way we know exactly what’s going into the recipe and it tastes extra fresh! All you need are two extra ingredients and a spoon to stir!

Kalamata + Pine Nuts

Olives add an extra zing of flavor and pine nuts give your hummus an earthy crunch that we’re totally in love with. Pro tip: when toasting your pine nuts over a stovetop on medium heat, make sure to keep your eye on them the entire time! They can burn really quickly, so keep stirring them around. As soon as they turn a light brown color, remove them from the heat and pour onto a plate.


Toast 2 Tbsp. pine nuts and stir 5 chopped kalamata olives into your hummus.


Basil + Artichoke Hearts

We love adding this hummus spread on a toasted whole wheat or gluten-free tortilla with sliced tomatoes on top for some fresh pizza vibes.


Mix 2 Tbsp. fresh basil and 2 Tbsp. chopped artichoke hearts into your hummus.


Sundried Tomatoes + Garlic

Garlic makes EVERYTHING better, amiright?! If you have an extra few minutes, add this mixture with the hummus to a food processor for a beautiful light red color that looks gorgeous on a veggie platter.


Mix 2 Tbsp. minced garlic and 2 Tbsp. chopped sundried tomatoes into your hummus or blend in a food processor.

  1. Hummus is one of my fave things ever, so these tips to mix it up make me very happy! :) As ZenJen mentioned, the cilantro jalapeño is one of my all time faves. I also love Trader Joe’s edamame hummus. I’ve never tried pumpkin, but I’ve heard others say it’s good, so I’d think some pumpkin purée and cinnamon/pumpkin spice would make for a more savory hummus combo. Beet hummus is on my list to try; actual beets mixed in with some goat cheese or feta would be amazing in regular hummus too!
